So much to offer and desperate for your support and love in Fiji

New Zealanders’ impression of Fiji is white sand, lagoons full of blue water with brightly coloured tropical fish, fish markets, kava and torch lighting ceremonies at a 5-star resort. In contrast to this idealistic picture is an ‘underbelly’ of abandonment and abuse. Throughout Fiji there are literally hundreds of women who have been rejected and shunned from their extended families simply because they are a ‘solo mother’.

Fiji has no government support for these mums and their children and sadly many also find themselves unwelcome in their communities and churches. As a result of this, many solo mothers and their children find themselves trapped, living in the cycle of poverty.

International Needs, in partnership with Ola Fou (New Life), is developing training opportunities for these women to equip them with practical vocational skills. The solo mothers will be assisted to start and grow a small business. The exciting result of this is they will be able to support themselves and their children.

Mary has a story of abuse and hopelessness, but having recently graduated from her training course, this is her new story… Mary has established a small business printing on fabrics, such as sulus (wraps) and pillowcases, that she runs from her home in one of the local villages. She also has a part-time cleaning job. With the confidence and business skills she has learnt from being in the programme, she has been able to rent her own home and live independently. She also has gained confidence that she will be able to support her two children through their education.

We would love to hear more stories from young mums like Mary. Their lives and that of their children have been transformed because of this programme.

Will you help us raise $10,000 so that International Needs and our partners can continue transforming lives and changing communities in the island paradise of Fiji?

Could you help us with a gift of $100 to help fund this project?
