Give a decent education for at risk youth in Tonga ministry puts hopes in your hands

Over the last few weeks ‘normality’ has returned to many Kiwi households with the youth of our nation returning to school. In the Pacific Kingdom of Tonga schooling is a vital tool in equipping their youth to escape the multi-generational trappings of poverty. We partner with the Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) specifically for the development of young people in Tonga.

TNYC was established in 1991 by church leaders and government ministries to find out issues that are of most significant concern to the youth of Tonga and to develop programmes to address these. They discovered that the top 5 issues for the Youth of Tonga are:

  1. Youth unemployment,
  2. School drop out,
  3. Low self-esteem/mental health,
  4. Climate change and environmental issues,
  5. Alcohol, drugs and substance abuse.

With our support, TNYC is beginning a programme called ‘School is My Friend’.

Building on the success of a pilot project that we supported in 2017, this programme focuses on the first and second issues raised. It supports and enables young people aged 13 – 18, at risk of dropping out of school, to complete a basic, decent education which could lead to further development academically, career-wise and into business innovation for self-employment. However, for this programme to make a significant impact in the lives of the students, their families and community, we need your help.

Will you help us and the Tongan National Youth Congress to invest in these young people and give them a sense of pride and purpose?

Could you help us with a gift of $100 to help fund this project?

Please note: Your gift is fully tax deductible by Inland Revenue at 33.3% for donations to disaster relief, community development, child sponsorship and NZ Aid projects. If it is for evangelism, church planting and supporting church workers it is refunded at 6% - being a refund of the portion of administration charges used to run the NZ office.
